The boxing hotbed of San Diego/Tijuana is starting to gear up in the New Year and long running San Diego promoter Bobby DePhilippis is back in the mix as his outfit, Bobby D. Presents, in association with Jorge Marron Productions and A&T GYM offer their first event of 2012 on Friday, January 27th. In a partnership with Boston Red Sox first baseman and Tijuana native, Adrian Gonzalez, the “Champions of Tomorrow” fight card will be held at the Gonzalez Sports Academy located in the San Diego suburb of Chula Vista, CA. The 29,000 square-foot facility is equipped with various facilities to learn, practice and train the fundamentals of baseball among others sports.
In the eight round main event, twenty-one year old welterweight Oscar Godoy (4-1, 2KOs) takes on KO artist Joshua Marks (7-3, 7KOs) of El Centro, CA. Godoy of Watsonville, CA, turned pro in ’09 with a split decision win over Eduardo Herrera. In his second bout, Godoy suffered his only defeat but since then has rattled off three quick wins, all in the latter half of 2011. Now he will look to keep the streak going when he faces hard hitting and much more experienced “Superman” Marks. Originally from Georgia, Marks has found a home in the Imperial Valley but has made a boxing career in Mexico with seven of his ten pro fights held in our neighbor to the south. Despite facing the much tougher opposition than Godoy, Marks has never been stopped while knocking out every opponent in every one of his wins which will make for an all action match up.Also featured on the card will be fan friendly featherweight Pablo “Bronco” Armenta (6-1-1, 2KOs) of San Diego, CA, who is coming off his first loss to up and coming Guy Robb last September. Armenta, who what he lacks in style makes up for in heart, will be facing Omar Sanchez (0-2-1) of Fairfield, CA. The bout is scheduled for four rounds.
In a special attraction, undefeated light welterweight Adrian Vargas (5-0, 3KOs) looks to keep his undefeated streak in intact and ruin Gabriel Medina’s pro debut in another scheduled four rounder.
The fight card is fleshed out with Tijuana super bantamweight Christian “Huevo” Bojorquez (4-0, 1KO) taking the always dangerous TBA in a four rounder and Merida, Yucatan, Mexico’s Pablo Copul (6-2, 4KOs) also scheduled versus an opponent to be determined.
One more bout is scheduled.
Doors open at 7pm with the first punch thrown at 8pm. The Gonzalez Sports Academy is located at 2390 Boswell Rd., Chula Vista. Tickets start at $30 and can be purchased at the venue or by calling 619.420.8866 or 619.743.0698.
