Shocking Upset, San Diego’s Martin Loses His “0″!

In a serious apple cart turner, previously undefeated super bantamweight Christopher Martin (23-1-2, 6KOs) of San Diego, CA, was defeated last Saturday night, October 1st, in his Top Rank debut in Las Vegas, NV. Martin took on the ultra durable Jose Angel Barranza (34-21-2, 26KOs) of Mexico City, Mexico. After ten grueling rounds in which Berranza was always the aggressor as Martin tried to out box him, the split decision scores of 98-92 and 96-94 for Berranza, 97-93 for Martin were turned in. The bout was part of the Nishioka-Marquez under card in which the Japanese defended his WBC super bantamweight title against the tough Mexican via unanimous decision.

After becoming a considerable draw in his hometown of San Diego and achieving world rankings with all the sanctioning bodies, Martin recently signed with major promoter and the bout versus Berranza was his first. The loss comes at the most inoportune time as it was planned that Martin would also perform on the under card of the Margarito-Cotto II match up in December en route to possibly a world title shot next year. How much those plans stay in place is up in the air.
