Three time welterweight champion Antonio “Tijuana Tornado” Margarito (37-6-27KO) was treated like a hero by the fans in Aguascalientes, MX, last week as he visited the city of his comeback fight slated for May 8th as part of the San Marcos Fair.
Last Tuesday, Margarito was part of a press conferance to announce his next bout versus Roberto “La Amenaza” Garcia (28-2, 21KO) of Texas. The ten round bout will be the main event of “Latin Fury 14″ presented by Top Rank and Zanfer Promotions and distributed on PPV in the United States and by Azteca in the Mexico.
Also featured on the fight card will be the first defense of the interim WBA super featherweight champion Jorge “Coloradito” Solis (38-2-2, 28KO) versus Puerto Rico’s Mario Santiago (21-2-1, 14KO) while undefeated Brandon Rios (24-0-1, 17) faces off against once beaten Urbano Antillon (27-1, 20KO). In a special bout, the son of Ricardo “Finito” Lopez, Alfonso Lopez, will make his PPV debut.
Margarito took advantage of the two days that he spent in Aguascalientes, MX, by running in the morning at the city’s Institute of Sports complex and in the afternoon going through his routine of boxing exercises at the gym of Alfonso Zamora.
With his new trainer, Roberto Garcia, at his side, Margarito did six rounds of shadowboxing, six rounds of mitt work, speed bag and jump rope.
Margarito looked in supreme shape despite more than a year of inactivity.
“We are working very well in Oxnard in the gym of the Garcia family,” Margarito stated. “My body has rebounded well and in the three weeks that we have been working together, we have given more than 100%.”
Trainer Roberto Garcia added that Margarito has been shedding the weight without a problem and that next week, the “Tijuana Tornado” will begin his sparring sessions.
