In a controversial outcome, former IBF minimum weight champion Roberto “Mako” Leyva (27-11-1, 21KO) of Ensenada, MX, came up short against Juan Jose “Goofy” Montes via disqualification on Saturday night at the University of Guadalajara.
The main event WBC super flyweight title fight was broadcast by Televisa in Mexico and ended in the third round after referee Gelasio Perez Huerta deemed a headbutt from Leyva to be intentional. Montes was cut over the left eye and after the ringside doctor announced that he did not recommend for Montes to continue, the referee judged for the butt be intentional and ended the contest.
The threat of a head clash seemed obvious from the first round as the southpaw Leyva took the fight to the younger and less experienced Montes that by the second, Leyva seemed to have the upper hand in the bout as he attacked the body of Montes with effective hooks especially against the ropes.
Leyva’s team is planning on filing a protest not only with the Guadalajara boxing commission but as well as with the WBC because of the irregularities that abounded before the doctor deemed the cut produced by a head butt.
