Humberto “Zorrita” Soto (51-7-2, 32KO) of Los Mochis, MX, but training out of Tijuana under Bobby Quirarte, captured his third WBC title in as many divisions with a unanimous decision over former champion David Diaz (35-3-1, 17KO) in the semi-main bout in last night’s “The Event” fight card at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, TX.
The twelve round bout was for the recently vacated lightweight title which Edwin Valero let go after successfully defending it against Tijuana’s Antonio DeMarco.
Soto put Diaz on the canvas twice, in the first and in the last round, and controlled most of the action although admitting that Diaz’s southpaw style gave him problems.
Official scores were 117-109 twice and 115-111.
In the main event, Filipino super star Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38KO) proved once again why he is the pound for pound best fighter in the world as he pummeled natural welterweight Joshua Clottey (35-4, 20KO) to defend his WBO title for the first time in front of almost 51,000 screaming fight fans.
Clottey was never in the fight as he covered up for the majority of the twelve rounds as Pacquiao landed heavily and often with multi punch combinations to earn the unanimous decision with scores of 117-109 twice and 120-108.
In another PPV bout, former two time lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo (60-10-1, 52KO) retired from professional boxing after not being able to continue after the fifth round in his welterweight clash against “The Contender” alumni Alfonso Gomez (22-4-2, 11KO).
Castillo of Mexicali, MX, by way of Empalme also trained in Tijuana for the bout under the tutelage of Romulo Quirarte. the 36-year-old fighter announced his retirement immediately after the bout.
