“Terrible” Morales: “It Has Been Six Months of Hard Work!”

Even though the three time world champion Erik “Terrible” Morales of the Zona Norte of Tijuana, MX, spend two and a half months in the Otomi Mountains in south central Mexico in order to get in fighting shape for his return this Saturday night in Monterrey, MX, it has been over six months of hard work that gave “Terrible” the best shape he has shown in years.

Morales’ opponent will be former lightweight champion Jose Alfaro of Nicaragua who is coming off a devastating loss at the fists of another Tijuana fighter, Antonio DeMarco, last year.

“It will not affect me that fact that I lost so much weight in so little time,” Morales stated from a public workout in a Monterrey Gym.  “For the last two months we worked on the technical side but it has been a total of six months of weight reduction to get to this place we are in now.”

For many, the question arises of why Morales would choose such a tough opponent for his first fight back after a two and a half year lay off.

“He is a good rival, we know that he is very strong and he is going to push me inside the ring,” the 34-year-old Morales said.  “That is the reason why we wanted to fight him.   I don’t want to trick anybody and myself either.  This is the ultimate test to see if I still have what it takes to continue in this or not.  The strongest always takes control inside the right, the most intelligent and the one with the most experience and I expect for that to be the case with Alfaro.”

Despite Saturday’s night being his first bout since his loss to David Diaz for the WBC lightweight title, Morales mentioned that he would not want to go the twelve rounds the fight is scheduled for.

“It would not be the best to go the twelve rounds,” Morales said.  “My strategy is planned out but it doesn’t mean that we are only going for the knock out, the fight will develop inside the ring between he and I and if the fight goes the distance, I will be ready.”
