Three time world champion Erik “Terrible” Morales (49-6, 34KO) of Tijuana, MX, made his return to the squared circle after two and half years hiatus a successful one as he was awarded a unanimous decision over former lightweight champion Jose Alfaro (23-6, 20KO) of Nicaragua. The official scores were 117-111 and 116-112 twice for the 34 year old Morales. The bout was held at the Arena Monterrey in Monterrey, MX, and hosted by KO Entertainment and Box Latino. With the win, Morales was awarded the WBC International welterweight title.
Morales, whose battle with the scale was no secret after reaching the 200 lbs. mark in his retirement, looked soft but took control of the bout early with impressive boxing skills that kept that much younger and fresher Alfaro at bay.
Morales cut Alfaro over the right eyebrow early in the fight with a crisp right hand and from there on continued to punish the Central American with spurts of precise combinations.
Alfaro was game but had trouble getting past Morales’ experience as the Tijuana native was able to box from the outside and slip many of Alfaro’s punches.
Although Morales’ condition began to betray him in the later rounds as he began to show fatigue, “Terrible” did not let up and continued to attack Alfaro until the final bell.
Minutes after the bout Morales expressed wanting to fight once again in Mexico before the end of the year and then going after the cream of the jr. welterweight crop in a big fight.
In other results, Ivan Morales (5-0, 3KO), younger brother of Erik, stayed undefeated with a unanimous decision over Eduardo Hernandez (0-1) in a super flywieght four round bout while David “Flecha” Gaspar (14-2-1, 8KO) went the six round distance against Juan Zuñiga (3-16-1, 1KO) to be awarded a unanimous decision in also a 115 lbs. match up.
