The return of Tijuana’s three time welterweight champion Antonio Margarito has been made official when it was announced recently by his promoter Top Rank in association with Promociones Zanfer that the “Tijuana Tornado” will face Roberto “La Amenaza” Garcia on May 8th in Aguascalientes, MX.
The ten round super welterweight bout will top off the “Latin Fury 14″ PPV card that will also feature the interim WBA super featherweight champion Jorge “Coloradito” Solis (38-2-2, 28KO) of Guadalajara, MX, defends his title for the first time versus Puerto Rican Mario Santiago (21-2-1, 14KO) while undefeated Brandon Rios (24-0-1, 17KO) takes a step up against the tough Urbano Antillon (27-1, 20KO) and in his PPV debut, the son of the legendary Ricardo “Finito” Lopez, Alfonso Lopez (3-0, 2KO) will face off against an opponent to be determined.
Margarito (37-6, 27KO) captured his first title in 2002 after defeating Antonio Diaz for the vacant WBO welterweight title. Margarito successfully defended the title seven times in five years against the likes of Kermit Cintron, Andrew Lewis and Joshua Clottey.
The “Tijuana Tornado” lost the title to Paul Williams in 2007 but crowned himself the IBF king soon thereafter when he brutally stopped Kermit Cintron in their rematch in 2008. Later that same year he stopped Miguel Cotto in their much anticipated match up to capture the WBA version of the crown.
Garcia (28-2, 21KO) of Tamaulipas, MX, but living in Weslasco, Texas, has not tasted defeat in his last 14 bouts and has not lost in five years.
“Coloradito” Solis along with his brother “Archie” are only the fifth set of brothers who have captured titles as professional joining the ranks of Ricardo and Rene Arredondo, Gabriel and Rafael Ruelas, Erik and Diego Morales, and Juan Manuel and Rafael Marquez.
Santiago will be challenging a world title for the second time. In 2008 he tied with Steven Luevano for the WBO featherweight title.
Brandon Rios as well as Urbano Antillon are ranked as the best in the lightweight division and they are vying for a world title this year. Their bout will be their first step in that quest.
