According to Dan Antuna of local newspaper Frontera, Tijuana jr. flyweight Javier “Cobrita” Mendoza (12-1-1, 9KO) only needed a pair of rounds to stop the over matched Jose “Planchita” Casillas (0-3) Saturday night at the Mariano Matamoros Gym in Tijuana, MX.
Mendoza once again showed great defense and footwork as he was able to slip the attack of Casillas who trains out of the Mojac Gym in Tijuana along with former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito among others.
The “Cobra” bit it in the second round when he landed a hard left to the temple of Casillas sending him down to the canvas. Casillas beat the count given by referee Juan Morales Lee only to be dropped once again from a barrage of punches from Mendoza. Casillas was able to beat the count once again but Lee decided he had seen enough and stopped the bout at the 2:19 mark of the second round.
With the win, Mendoza proved that he is ready for fighters of a higher caliber and it was stated that in his next bout he would challenge for the state title.
