On Tuesday afternoon, the Tijuana Boxing Commission held their annual press lunch and took the opportunity to announce the nominees for their 2009 Boxing Awards.
Nominated for the Fighter of the Year (International) or in other words, the local fighter who went out to different countries and fought under the Tijuana flag were WBC super featherweight champion Humberto “Zorrita” Soto (50-7-2, 32KO), IBF featherweight Cristobal “Lacandon” Cruz (39-11-2, 23KO) and interim WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (23-1-1, 17KO).
Bantamweight David De La Mora (19-0, 13KO), super flyweight Juan Luis “Perla Negra” Hernandez (15-2-1, 9KO) and super flyweight Arturo “Fuerte” Badillo (17-0, 15KO) are nominated for Fighter of the Year.
In the Fight of the Year, the nominees are minimumweights Jose Figueroa (9-4, 7KO) vs. Ivan Meneses (14-5-1, 8KO) in which Meneses won by unanimous decision in ten, bantamweights Rafael Gutierrez (3-2, 1KO) vs. Luis “Chapito” Valdez (13-4-1, 6KO) in which Valdez won by a ten round unanimous decision and bantamweights David De La Mora vs. Luis “Chapito” Valdez in which De La Mora knocked out Valdez in the sixth after going down to the canvas himself in the first.
For the Most Dramatic Fight of the Year, the nominees are David Gaspar (12-2-1, 7KO) vs. Carlos Rueda (13-4, 11KO), Rueda knocked out Gaspar in the third round of their super flyweight fight, Hugo Partida (15-2-2, 13KO) vs. Jesus Lopez (3-5-1) where featherweight Partida stopped Lopez in the seventh of a scheduled eight and Juan Luis “Perla Negra” Hernandez vs. Alejandro “Timon” Martinez (15-2-1, 11KO) in which both bantamweights went to war with Martinez meeting the canvas once in the eighth and thus awarding the ten round split decision to Hernandez.
The Prospect of the Year will be disputed between bantamweight Adan Ozuna (8-2-3, 3KO), flyweight Felipe Salguero (10-2-1, 7KO), flyweight Javier “Cobrita” Mendoza (11-1-1, 8KO) and featherweight Alenjandro “Mantequitas” Rubio (9-0, 5KO).
The nominees for Rookie of the Year are lightweight Antonio Castro (5-0, 3KO), super bantamweight Jose Cayetano (3-0, 1KO), flyweight Hanzel Martinez (5-0, 4KO) and minimumweight Miguel Angel “El Kanibal” Garcia (2-0, 1KO)
Promoter of the Year is between Zanfer Promotions and Tijuana Promotions.
Manager of the Year is between Pedro Moran Jr., Romulo Quirarte, Romulo Quirarte Jr. and Simon Contreras.
