In a very recent interview conducted by Robert Coster of FightNews.com with current WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero of Venezuela, it was revealed that Tijuana’s Hector Velazquez will be challenging for the green and gold belt that Valero holds on December 19th in Caracas, Venezuela.
After Valero was scheduled to defend his title against Humberto “Zorrita” Soto November 14th, the Venezuelan, who whole heartedly supports the socialist government of Hugo Chavez, was denied a visa to enter the United States forcing him to make new plans of defending his title in his native land.
The current #1WBC ranked lightweight Antonio DeMarco was rumored to be the challenger as well as Oxnard, CA’s Rolando “Pochito” Reyes but now the unbeaten Valero (25-0, 24KO) has revealed his next opponent.
The 34 year old Velazquez is coming off a majority decision loss to Ensenada, MX’s Joksan Hernandez and has not fought in the lightweight division since mid 2008 and has only fought above the super featherweight division four times. The experienced Velazquez owns a win over Bobby Pacquiao and has stepped in the ring with Elio Rojas, Mario Santiago, Manny Pacquaio, Rocky Juarez, Kevin Kelly and Israel Vazquez on his way to amassing a 51-13-2, 35KO record.
