Marvin Quintero Victorious on ShoBox!

quinteromarvin1Tijuana’s super featherweight Marvin “Cachorro” Quintero (16-1, 12KO) passed his sternest test to date when he defeated amateur standout Wes Ferguson (20-4-1, 6KO) of Las Vegas, NV via a lightweight division eight round unanimous decision in the semi main event of ShoBox: The Next Generation series on the Showtime channel.

After a slow start in the first round where Ferguson tried to establish the distance and the rhythm of the bout fighting from the outside, the southpaw Quintero was able to close the gap and apply aggressive pressure from the second round on but not before the Tijuana fighter was caught with a flush right hand to the jaw that made Quintero lose his footing.

In the third and fourth, Quintero stepped on the pedal and attacked even more than the first two rounds combined and scored with effective power punching led by the straight left hand.

By the fifth round, Quintero was well in control although Ferguson was very much in the fight.  Quintero began to let go of his power punches landing a hard right hook and uppercuts from either fist.  Quintero had his best round in the sixth when half way through the round he landed a hard left hook that nearly sends Ferguson down to the canvas.  Quintero tries to capitalize for the remainder of the stanza but Ferguson proves to slick and survives the round.

In the seventh with the end imminent, Ferguson begins to land solid right hands that seem to bother Quintero but “Cachorro” answers in kind with straight lefts of his own.

By the eight round, Ferguson needs a KO to win and goes after it letting his hands go but Quintero has no trouble taking control in the second half of the round and cruising to victory.

Official scores were 78-74 twice and 79-73.

Quintero’s gym mate at the CREA gym undefeated super flyweight David De La Mora (16-0, 11KO) was awarded a six round unanimous decision over Alex Becerra (19-8, 9KO) on the un-televised portion of the fight card.

In the main event, a welterweight slugfest ensued when Luis Abregu of Argentina stopped Puerto Rico’s Irving Garcia in the fourth round of a scheduled ten.

After being dropped for the first time in his career seconds into the first round and again in the fourth first from a flush right hand and then with a left hook, Abregu finishes with barrage of punches that sends the worse for wear Garcia down to the canvas with his head resting on the bottom rope.   Referee Jack Reiss begins the count but then decides against it waiving off the bout at the 2:59 mark of the fourth round.

You are welcome Ricardo. I think Quintero looked great although he still needs a little bit more work but I am sure that he will get better with time.
