Just days ago, the Mexico City based World Boxing Council released its much anticipated updated world rankings for the seventeen different weight classes that comprise professional boxing. Following is a rundown of all the local San Diego/Tijuana fighters that made the illustrious list.
In the heaviest division in which a local fighter registers at middleweight Juan Carlos “Saladito” Virgen (11-0-1, 9KO) of nearby Ensenada ranks at #36 according to the WBC while San Luis, MX’s Rogelio “Porky” Medina (17-0, 14KO) also comes in at #36 in the super welterweight division.
Former world title challenger Antonio Diaz (46-5-1, 29KO) of Coachella is ranked at #29 in the 147 lbs. weight class while his once opponent SDFights.com #1 ranked Antonio Margarito (37-6, 29KO) of Tijuana is mentioned as not available for a ranking by the boxing organization.
The #2 SDfights.com ranked fighter and NABO-WBO lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (20-1-1, 14KO) is listed as #4 in the lightweight division while Tijuana’s by way of Los Mochis, MX Humberto Mauro “Betillo” Gutierrez (25-1-1, 19KO) is ranked #3 one weight class lighter at 130 lbs. Humberto “Zorrita” Soto also of Los Mochis is the champion of the division. Soto trains out of the CREA gym in Tijuana with Bobby Quirarte.
Ranked #3 in the featherweight division is SDFights.com #6 ranked Juan Carlos Burgos (21-0, 15KO) with Hector Velazquez (51-12-2, 35KO) of Cheto’s Gym ranked at #9.
Ensenada’s Joksan Hernandez (15-1, 9KO) makes the super bantamweight list at #37 while another fighter of the CREA gym, David De La Mora (16-0, 11KO) comes in at #33 in the bantamweight division.
Arturo “Fuerte” Badillo (15-0, 13KO) is ranked at #32 as a super flyweight and the last local fighter to make the list is Tijuana’s Julio Cesar “Gatito” Felix (11-2, 4KO) at #28 as a minimum weight.
