David De La Mora Ready To Make His Mark!

delamora1Tijuana’s undefeated super flyweight David De La Mora (15-0, 11KO) is gearing for his first fight in the United States when he travels six hours north of his native city to face off against the experienced Alex Becerra (19-7, 9KO) in a scheduled six round affair this Friday night at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, CA, just north of Santa Barbara.

The De La Mora-Becerra bout supports the that night’s ShoBox: The Next Generation telecast with welterweight Luis Abregu of Argentina facing off against Puerto Rico’s Irving Garcia and De La Mora’s gym mate Marvin Quintero takes on his biggest challenge to date in Las Vegas, NV’s Wes Ferguson.

The twenty year old De La Mora comes from a fighting family and has never known anything else.

“I was interested in boxing since I was very small, my whole family has been involved with the sport,” De La Mora reminisces fondly.  “I started fighting in exhibition bouts at the age of five but I was ten when I started training seriously and I haven’t stopped.”

His father, Porfirio De La Mora, was  a fighter in his own right and now holds an important position within the sport.

“My father was a professional fighter.  Right now he is the President of the Municipal Amateur Boxing Committee.  He is involved with that but he has nothing to do with the professional side of it.”

De La Mora had an extensive amateur career with a total of seventy fights and only ten losses capturing a bronze medal in a national tournament.

He began his professional career in November of ’06 with a second round KO over Enrique Felix.

“it was a left hook to the body that ended the fight.  Since then, the left hook has been my favorite punch,” De La Mora says as he smiles.

Now after displaying his skills for the last three years under the watchful eye of Don Romulo Quirarte of the CREA gym where De La Mora has trained for eight years after a two year stint at a different gym, De La Mora is ready to make the leap stateside.

The much older Becerra, 27, is a seasoned fighter out of El Paso, TX, by way of Ciudad Juarez, MX, who almost doubles the amount of fights as his young opponent.

“We have seen one of his fights although you can’t see much because he gets knocked out in the first round, we can see he is an experienced fighter with twenty six fights but we are going to show that we are ready for him and for much more.”

In this, his first bout of 2009, De La Mora is ready to make his mark and start the year in the right direction.

“I expect to fight and continue to train and to be ready for any date that my team mentions as my next fight.”
