According to FightNews.com, a teleconference was held recently to
discuss Tijuana’s safety for fight fans planning to travel across the border to take part of “Latin Fury 8-Tijuana Thunder” which features Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in the main event along with four other televised mega fights on PPV March 28th.
Parcipating in the conference was Bob Arum, head of Top Rank, Zanfer Promotions’ Fernando Beltran, the mayor of Tijuana Jorge Ramos and the Secretary of Tourism for the state of Baja California, Oscar Escobedo.
“Where ever you have drug dealers, you are going to have violence. People that want to go have a good time, eat, watch some boxing, they are going to be undisturbed. Just like people that go to Las Vegas,” Arum stated regarding the reports of violence associated with Tijuana by the U.S. media. “In Tijuana, there has been an absence of violence and its wrong for the state department to paint all of Mexico with a broad brush.”
“We are happy to be the host of a world wide boxing event,” Mayor Jorge Ramos stated. “It is going to give us the opportunity to show the real face of our city,” Ramos concluded.
